A dog owner from the United Kingdom shared a hilarious video update of her dog’s ongoing recall training, and it doesn’t seem to be going very well.
The viral video shared on TikTok on Monday by @mac_the_golden, shows the pup hanging out by the water at Rother Valley Country Park, near Sheffield, staring at his mom from afar as he disregards her commands.
“How is your recall training going?” reads layover text in the clip. The caption says: “Recall training is going great thanks.” Newsweek reached out to @mac_the_golden for comment via TikTok comments. We could not verify the details of the case.
British animal charity Battersea Dogs & Cats Home says that recall is arguably the most useful training for your dog, and all owners should be nearly 100 percent sure that their pup will come to them when called before allowing them out off the leash.
You should start this training at home or in your fenced garden, but if you do not have much space available, you can also do it at the park, using a longline training lead with a harness for safety reasons.
When you introduce the cue word, immediately reward your dog with a treat or toy you know they will love. This will teach them that they can get great rewards when they listen to you. It is very important to be consistent and stick to the same word.
You can also recall train your dog effectively with fun games, according to the American Kennel Club, which can be enjoyable for both humans and canines.
“Catch me” is when you start running asking your pet to chase you. Then there is hide-and-seek, when you call your dog from another room. And last but not least, there is “hot potato,” which involves multiple people calling the pup and rewarding him every time he goes to the right person.
The video quickly went viral on social media and it has so far received over 2.3 million views and more than 200,000 likes on the platform.
One user, Alicia, commented: “Hahahaha the most golden retriever thing I’ve ever seen.”
Eastcoastalaskandogmom posted: “Water causes immediate hearing loss for my golden.”
Daniel added: “No need to shout again, human. I ignored you just fine the first time.”
