Sarah Jessica Parker’s husband Matthew Broderick may be one of the few movie stars who didn’t make a guest appearance on her hit HBO romance Sex and the City, and the Ferris Bueller’s Day Off star has finally revealed why.
During a recent appearance on James Corden‘s Sirius XM show This Life of Mine, Broderick explained why he never appeared on the comedy when it was airing on HBO from 1998 to 2004.
“Whenever there was a part that I could do, I couldn’t do it, is really all that happened,” he said, chalking it up to scheduling conflicts.
But there was one role, in particular, that he outrightly turned down: The premature ejaculator Justin Theroux played in Season 2.
“Sometimes it was like: ‘Do you wanna do two days as the premature ejaculator?’” he told Corden. “And I’d be, you know, ‘Well, I don’t know if I…,’ you know? It’s just kind of embarrassing.”
Broderick lamented that he never got to star on the show alongside his wife. (However, it’s worth noting that there is still time, as the HBO reboot And Just Like That is currently filming Season 3!)
“I wish that I had done it or been in it. You know, that was her thing, and that would be stunting me or something. I don’t know,” he said.
He added, “It just never worked out. I loved that show and I would’ve been delighted to be in it, but it just never lined up right.”
Years after he starred on the show, Theroux said Sex and the City had become known for its guest appearances at the time, much like Law & Order. “Sex and the City was one of those shows that they burned through every actor in the first couple seasons, I guess. It’s like Law & Order: It’s kind of a rite of passage, you have to do Sex and the City,” he said in 2019.
He also joked about the role, saying, “I’m a premature ejaculator in this episode of Sex and the City and I’m clearly hung up about it—typecasting!”
Theroux was one of several stars to play Carrie’s love interest, including Vince Vaughn, Mikhail Baryshnikov, David Duchovny, John Slattery, and many, many more. But the show ended with Bradshaw finally getting her happily ever after with Mr. Big, played by Chris Noth, until his untimely death in the And Just Like That series premiere.
Now, Carrie is getting a second shot at love on And Just Like That with her former carpenter beau, Aidan Shaw, played by rom-com legend John Corbett.
But their love story ended on an ambiguous note at the end of Season 2, which means there’s still time for Broderick to land a guest appearance as one of Carrie’s love interests.
