Bruce Campbell is a horror movie icon, having famously originated the role of Ash Williams in Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead franchise. Given his extensive work in the genre, fans might be surprised to hear that Campbell is also a big fan of The Golden Bachelorette.
We learned this exciting tidbit when the actor stopped by DECIDER’s studio last week to promote his new thriller series Hysteria, which is currently streaming on Peacock. Before he sat down with his co-star Anna Camp and executive producers Matthew Scott Kane and David A. Goodman for the interview, Campbell spent a good chunk of time gushing over ABC’s hottest new dating series — so, of course, we had to ask him for his hot takes when the camera was rolling.
“I didn’t like The Bachelorette, the regular one, because the guys competing were all A-types and they were a-holes and they were not nice to each other,” Campbell said. “Now, they’re all my age. They’re all fabulous, mid-sixties.”
“The guy comes back and he’s crying. They go, ‘Hey, man, it’s OK. You’ll pull through’ And they’re getting to know each other. They’re actually nice people. And it’s kind of fun to watch, like, what I’m becoming,” Campbell continued, noting it would be “weird” if he were in that position but he finds the show “surprisingly endearing.”
ABC kicked things off with Gerry Turner helming The Golden Bachelor in September 2023, while The Golden Bachelorette featuring Joan Vassos began airing on the network last month. Much like its predecessor, the spinoff follows one bachelor or bachelorette as they search for love amid a curated crew of eligible singles. The only difference? Everyone is in their late 50s to late 60s.
While Campbell declared himself a tried and true fan of the show, he did have one bone to pick with producers.
“My only complaint is the bachelorette works long hours, and sometimes she’s nodding off when she’s trying to be really interested in their grandchildren,” he said.
Perhaps Vassos should watch Hysteria — that will be sure to wake her up!
The Golden Bachelorette airs Wednesday nights at 8/7c on ABC.
