David Harbour, who plays Jim Hopper on Stranger Things, says some of the show’s stars were “uncontrollably crying” while reading the final episode of Season 5.
As filming for Season 5 enters its final stages of production, Harbour says the table read for the final episode was done not too long ago. Some of the stars, several of whom have spent their childhood on the series, were “uncontrollably crying” according to Harbour.
While appearing on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Harbour shared some details about the upcoming final chapter of Stranger Things.
“The end of this episode when we were reading it — just us reading it — about halfway through, people started crying,” Harbour said. “Then about the last 20 minutes, it was just uncontrollably crying, waves of different people. Noah Schnapp being my favorite.”
Harbour didn’t elaborate on exactly why they were crying, but it could just be that they were realizing that their journey together was coming to an end. Either that or some major character deaths are coming.
The actor pointed out that the visceral reaction was partially due to “the fact that these kids, it was their childhood.”
While Stranger Things became quite a hit for Netflix, the show has been criticized for its long wait times in between seasons.
Season 4, however, was incredibly well produced and visually appealing but the child actors are now in their 20s still trying to portray young teenagers which some have argued was a result of the delays.
Stranger Things Season 5 does not yet have an official release date, but series star Gaten Matarazzo revealed back in September to The Direct that the next and final season would be available to stream in 2025.
“The plan for people seeing it is definitely next year. That’s the goal,” he said at the time. “There [are] always setbacks. There’s always things that come into play when making a season, especially one that’s huge. So there [are] no guarantees, but I think next year is a safe bet.”
