EXCLUSIVE: The Russo’s latest Citadel spin-off has hit a ratings landmark for Amazon out of Italy.
The streamer told us that the big-budget Citadel: Diana is now the top-launched Italian original around the world for its first weekend, based on viewership outside its country of origin. Amazon didn’t give us numbers but said the Matilda De Angelis-starrer is number one in Italy, the U.S. and UK, while it has entered the top five in nearly 150 countries including Canada, Australia, Germany, Spain, France, Brazil, Mexico and India, which sets a new bar for Prime Video’s international viewership of Italian-language content.
The success of the Italian series has attracted more audiences to the U.S. version of Citadel, Amazon said, from places like the U.S., UK and Italy. Italian originals that previously performed well for the streamer include Everybody Loves Diamonds and The Bad Guy.

Produced by ITV Studios-backed Cattleya and Amazon MGM Studios, and executive produced by the Russo Brothers‘ AGBO, Citadel: Diana is set in 2030 Milan. It follows an undercover agent working for the eponymous global spy agency, Diana Cavalieri (De Angelis), as she is trapped behind enemy lines working as a mole in the powerful enemy syndicate Manticore.
Diana is the latest in the AGBO franchise, with the American original starring Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Richard Madden launching worldwide last year. When it rolled out in 2023, Amazon said this version was Prime Video’s second most-watched new original series outside the U.S. and fourth most-watched worldwide after 24 days. A second season of the U.S. original has entered production while an Indian version, Citadel: Honey Bunny, starring Varun Dhawan and Samantha Ruth Prabhu, will launch on November 7.
“The success of Citadel: Diana shows that our customers worldwide continue to embrace local stories, made by the best local storytellers and talent,” said James Farrell, VP International Originals, Prime Video & Amazon MGM Studios. “The world of Citadel is a truly unique concept, with our goal being to create a new spy world that travels globally.”
U.S. streaming ratings were up in September, according to Nielsen yesterday, led by strong growth for Prime Video and Disney+ as Thursday Night Football and Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2 performed well.
