There are two kinds of people in this world: those who haven’t watched FX’s English Teacher yet, and those who finished Season 1 and are nostalgically playing Elliana’s “Nirvana” on repeat while desperately hoping the comedy is renewed for a second season.
In case it wasn’t clear, I’m blasting “Nirvana” as I type this article.
Written and directed by Brian Jordan Alvarez, English Teacher Season 1, Episode 8, “Birthday” wrapped a spectacular (albeit much too short) season with Malcolm throwing Evan a surprise birthday party. The two met up at a gay bar where Malcolm invited all of Evan’s colleagues, and despite his initial dread, the night proved to be a soaring success — for Evan!
While Evan finally got the guy (you’ll have to read on to learn which one,) his buddy Markie ended the season heartbroken and secretly pining for Gwen.
Between the unrequited crush, the classroom chaos with students, and the after-hour, off campus adventures with faculty, it’s clear that English Teacher has lots more storytelling potential after only eight episodes. So will there be an English Teacher Season 2 on FX?
Here’s everything we know about the future of the series, including input from Brian Jordan Alvarez and Stephanie Koenig.
Will There Be An English Teacher Season 2 On FX And Hulu? Creator Brian Jordan Alvarez Weigh And Stephanie Koenig In
On English Teacher‘s Season 1 finale day, October 14, FX had yet to renew or cancel the critically-acclaimed comedy, but that’s not to say school won’t be back in session. It’s typical for networks and streamers to wait a while after a season wraps to announce the fate of a show, and considering the series received a 97% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes and the cast and creators are hopeful, renewal chances are looking good.
When Decider attended the Television Critics Association’s Summer 2024 press tour back in July, we chatted with English Teacher‘s Brian Jordan Alvarez and Stephanie Koenig about their thoughts on and hopes for the future of the show. Fans will be pleased to know that they love making the series as much as you love watching it, and should the FX gods allow it, they’d jump at the opportunity to make more.
Koenig shared that English Teacher was already “pushing” for future seasons before it even premiered, with dreams of tapping into the longevity of shows like It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. “I am completely ready to make as much of this show as is humanly possible,” Alvarez confirmed. “I’m very excited for the future.”
English Teacher Ending Explained: Season 1 Finale Recap, “Birthday”
Looking for a recap of English Teacher‘s Season 1 finale to see where we leave Evan, Gwen, and the rest of their Morrison-Hensley High School crew — plus Nick? As noted, the episode shows Malcom throwing a surprise birthday party for Evan at a gay bar in Austin, where he finally chooses between his ex Malcolm and his co-worker Harry.
Despite Harry being fully open to hooking up again after the Homecoming Debacle, in the end, Evan kissed Malcolm after his outstanding karaoke performance of Mazzy Star’s “Fade Into You.”
“Harry is great, but Malcolm is Malcolm and he has a special place in my heart. And the heart wants what it wants,” Evan told his pals. After Malcolm left an orgy, he met the group back at Gwen’s house to bond and eat birthday burgers by the unfinished pool.
Much to Markie’s dismay, Gwen and Nick got back together mere hours after breaking up, which means he missed his chance to shoot his shot. His crush, which Evan now knows about, is one of many reasons we need an English Teacher Season 2.
What Could English Teacher Season 2 Be About?
As the great Emmy-winning comedy Abbott Elementary reminded us, there’s plenty of material to mine when it comes to comedies centered in schools. Field trips, holidays, and current events, oh my! The possibilities seem endless, especially since Alvarez confirmed “the show is absolutely in present day. So anything that’s going on out there is going on in the show.”
English Teacher has more Austin antics to explore, more viral trends to tackle, and more compelling and hilarious student-teacher discussions to show. A Season 2 would check back in with the daily lives of Evan, Gwen, and Morrison-Hensley High’s finest to give fans more of what they love. And we need to know if Nick ever successfully builds that pool!
Until then, English Teacher Season 1 is now streaming on Hulu.
