On October 10, the 45-year-old actor—who is currently starring in the Broadway revival of Our Town—nailed the off-duty look in a pair of light-wash baggy denim, which she paired with a loos-fitting white button-up and Dune London’s “Deliberate XL” woven shoulder bag, topping off the oversized-everything ‘fit with a pair of black socks and patent-leather flats.
What really brought the look together, however is the unsung hero of any wardrobe: a chunky gray cardigan. Unexciting on the hanger but essential to any capsule wardrobe, Holmes’ unbuttoned sweater gave the outfit a cozy touch of luxury.

I couldn’t help but think of another iconic gray cardigan from Katie Holmes’ closet. Back in 2019, the Dawson’s Creek star went viral after stepping out in a very expensive cashmere bra set by Khaite, instantly putting the celeb-loved brand on the map.
“It was mania. It changed our business,” designer Catherine Holstein told the Financial Times in February 2020. “We dress a lot of celebrities, but there was something about that picture and the way she looked… you can’t create that. It was one of those moments that you would pay a lot of money for.”
At the time, Katie Holmes just wanted to give sexy fireside vibes while stepping out in New York City. “Honestly, I wasn’t feeling so sexy. And I saw that and was like, Sexy. I can do that! I thought it would be good if I was in a cabin sitting by the fire and wore the [matching] sweater over it,” she told Instyle in 2020. “That’s how my brain works. But then I was like, Oh, wait, I’m not in a cabin, and I’m not going to a cabin. I still thought I could pull it off, though. I had noticed other people wearing bras with blazers.”
She added the cardigan so she wouldn’t “get into trouble” with her teenage daughter, Suri Cruise. “We were school shopping, and I was just trying to hail a cab on Sixth Avenue,” she said of the viral photos. ”It looked way more glamorous than it was.”
