For an institution that’s been around for millennia, marriage remains impressively mysterious. I mean, you would think we’d have it down to a science by now, from everlasting happiness to the really important stuff, like how to restrain yourself from watching the latest episode of your shared show when your so-called soulmate “accidentally” falls asleep early. But of course, every marriage is as unique as the people in it, which makes it difficult to pin down the secret sauce that makes some marriages last a lifetime.
Luckily, there’s a new CBS comedy premiering this fall that gives us marrieds the opportunity to see ourselves — ups and downs included — reflected on the silver screen. Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage follows a lovable underdog couple navigating all sorts of matrimonial milestones. A spinoff of Young Sheldon and prequel to The Big Bang Theory, George & Mandy’s First Marriage follows Georgie Cooper (Montana Jordan) and Mandy McAllister (Emily Osment) as they raise their young family in mid-90s Texas.
In the spirit of everlasting love (or, at least, matrimony), we found 9 seasoned couples to give Georgie and Mandy (or anyone else who needs it – hi, it’s me) some hard-won advice for making their “first” marriage their only marriage:
The Advice:
Georgie and Mandy have some pretty significant obstacles on their path to wedded bliss: she’s 12 years older than him, for starters, and he was still a teenager — having lied about his age to get her to go out with him — when they unexpectedly conceived their daughter. On top of all that, the young family is living with Mandy’s parents, who aren’t exactly Georgie’s biggest fans. If marriage was a video game, these two would be playing on hard mode. Despite everything, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage is a sweet love story with a big heart — you can’t help but root for this funny and fiery couple to go the distance.
