In June 2019, President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump traveled to England for a state visit that prompted street protests and headlines about leaving Queen Elizabeth II waiting for tea. Though the public focused on Prince Harry and his efforts to avoid the man who called his wife “nasty,” there was plenty of togetherness between the royals and the US’s flashy first family. In her new eponymous memoir released on Tuesday, Melania notes that she and her husband even hosted King Charles III and Queen Camilla for a small dinner.
“Donald and I hosted an intimate dinner in honor of Prince Charles and the Duchess at the US ambassador’s residence—a perfect expression of the enduring ties between our nations,” she writes. “Despite the tumultuous backdrop of British politics at the time surrounding Brexit and changes at the Prime Minister’s office, the Queen and her family extended a warm welcome to us, treating us with the utmost hospitality.”
Melania adds that she and Trump have continued to keep in touch with the king via letter. “As we bid farewell to Her Majesty, we extended a cordial invitation for her return visit to the United States,” she writes. “She expressed her gratitude with a warm smile. Sadly, Her Majesty wasn’t able to visit with us again before her death in 2022, but our friendship with the Royal Family continues, and we exchange letters with King Charles to this day.”
You might be wondering what Charles and Melania found to talk about during these meetings, but the answer probably won’t be a surprise to anyone who knows about the king’s passion for climate change awareness. “Our paths had crossed many years ago in New York City,” Melania says. “This time we engaged in an interesting conversation about his deep-rooted commitment to environmental conservation.”
When asked about the king’s potential correspondence with Trump and Melania, Buckingham Palace declined to comment. Melania and her husband made another official visit to the UK in December 2019, and during that trip, they left Charles and Camilla waiting for tea. Through Melania’s eyes, at least, the relationship was a warm one.
