The No. 1 college team in the nation has gone down. The Alabama Crimson Tide lost their first game of the season in upset fashion, losing to unranked Vanderbilt. Alabama fell to the Commodores, 40-35.
Vanderbilt pulled off one of the biggest upsets in SEC history Saturday evening. This is Vanderbilt’s first win against a top-five program in program history. On top of that, the Commodores’ 40 points are also the most they’ve ever scored against a top-five team and the most they have scored against Alabama since a 78-0 win in 1906.
Prior to this massive win, the Commodores had 10 losses without a victory when Vanderbilt played the No. 1 team in the AP Poll, including losses to Alabama in 1980 and 2017.
The Crimson Tide has suffered their first loss in the Kalen DeBoer era. This moves Alabama to a 4-1 record and likely out of the top spot in the nation. As for Vanderbilt, this win could move them into the top 25 as they now sit with a 3-2 record.
Alabama recently moved to No. 1 in the nation after beating the Georgia Bulldogs last week in a thriller in Tuscaloosa.
Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia was emotional after the win, providing an NSFW response after the Crimson Tide.
“It’s literally all God’s timing,” Pavia said. “Literally, from the jump. God gave me a vision when I was a little kid. And He don’t let back any promises. It’s God’s timeline. I’m super thankful. Super thankful for guys like Eli Stowers. Man, that kid’s are incredible. The rest of our team. I mean, look at this. Look at this. Vandy, we’re f***ing turnt!”
“S**t, games like this change your life,” Pavia said. “It’s all about hype nowadays. I don’t like it like that. It’s a reality of NIL, all that stuff. Just stay grounded, be where my feet are every single day. Tomorrow, we’ve got to work on Kentucky.”
Vanderbilt held the Crimson Tide to 396 total yards compared to their 418 total yards. Alabama turned over the ball two times, while the Commodores committed zero of them. Vanderbilt also had 26 first downs and controlled the time of possession, having the ball at 42:08 minutes.
Alabama only had the ball for 17:52 and had 17 first downs.
Vanderbilt entered Saturday’s game as a 23.5-point underdog, and they wasted no time coming out of the gate with a 13-0 lead and not looking back. Despite the fight the Crimson Tide had shown, it was too much for them to overcome.
