Former San Francisco 49ers tight end Vernon Davis believes Jim Harbaugh will be successful in transforming the Chargers organization in the same way he impacted the Bay.
Harbaugh was Davis’ head coach toward the end of his career with San Francisco.

“Yeah, I think Harbaugh, that’s just how he’s wired. He has a unique ability to be able to turn any team around,” Davis told Noah Camras of LA Sports Report. “We’ve seen it over and over; you go back to Stanford to San Francisco and to Michigan. He’s done it on multiple occasions. It’s a gift, and I strongly believe he’ll do the same thing with the Los Angeles Chargers. If it doesn’t happen now, it’s going to happen eventually.”
Harbaugh was the 49ers’ head coach from 2011-14, which included one Super Bowl appearance. The football legend has a reputation for transforming struggling programs into winning teams.
The Chargers have started the season with a 2-1 record. Ahead of the Week 3 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Los Angeles organization already made history with Harbaugh at the helm.
It was the first time since 2012 that the Chargers began the season 2-0. The feat was a testament to Harbaugh’s coaching acumen.
“He knows exactly what it takes to be able to get someone or a group to rally behind him,” Davis said. “He has a formula — whether it’s a formula, whether it’s just his personality — he has that ‘that’ and that’s just something that can’t be taken away.”
Harbaugh’s impact to his team is infectious. Players love him. His coaching staff adores him.
Chargers offensive coordinator Greg Roman and defensive coordinator Jesse Minter followed Harbaugh to Los Angeles. The trio spent last season leading Michigan to an undefeated run and a national championship.
Davis describes Harbaugh in a similar manner to his current players in Los Angeles. Anybody that has played under Harbaugh speaks highly of the football icon.
“Being around him, just seeing how he operates as a coach, as a businessman, as a leader, he has all the qualities it takes to win and lead,” Davis added. “And guys believed in what he was trying to do, and I guess that’s the thing that he has, when it comes to a team, a group of men. They believe and they respect him as a coach. And he knows how to get the best out of his players.”
