Florida’s Big Bend region was hammered by Hurricane Helene late Thursday and into Friday morning, as the Category 4 storm made landfall with 140-mile-per-hour winds and brought record-breaking storm surges to the state.
More than a million people were without power in Florida as residents woke up Friday to assess the damage from the storm. Helene, which was downgraded to a tropical storm Friday morning, was moving north into Georgia and the Carolinas during the day.
