Joey Logano has voiced his outrage following a difficult race at Watkins Glen International, calling the track conditions a “complete disaster” after a collision during the 83rd lap of the Round of 16 of the 2024 Cup playoffs.
Logano, driving the No. 22 Ford, attempted a daring overtake that forced him, Brad Keselowski, and William Byron three-wide, ultimately leading to a wreck. In the chaos, Byron’s front tire ended up deeply lodged in Keselowski’s car.
Logano later reacted to the crash, and didn’t shy away from admitting his fault in what happened.
“I mean really, I’m not making any excuses, I needed to check up more but the track’s a complete disaster. They need to clean it up and I got pushed maybe four-wide at one point, so tried to give room there and got up in the marbles.
“When I went to turn back to the left, it’s got crap all over the tires and I got into him,” he said via Bob Pockrass.
Logano’s frustration was not just a spur-of-the-moment outburst.
“It’s still on me, right, but at the same time, clean the damn track. I brought it up at least two to three times about cleaning the track before the restarts, but it just didn’t happen,” Logano asserted.
The wreck had significant repercussions for William Byron, who found himself in P34 by the end of the race. Byron managed to salvage some stage points earlier, which provided a slight buffer from the weekend’s overall poor performance.
Speaking after the incident, Byron was disappointed in what happened:
“I am not sure exactly what happened, but I was trying to get to the outside of the No. 22 and the No. 6 kind of hooked back to the left. Glad we got some points in Stage two, that was helpful.
“We just have to go to Bristol and have a good weekend. This was just kind of a nightmare weekend.”
Shane van Gisbergen also had a difficult race after losing it on the last lap, losing him a potential victory, as reported by Newsweek Sports.
“Driver error. I knew Chris [Buescher] was really going to send it and push me if he could get there,” he said via Motorsport.com. “As I turned in, got a bit loose and clipped the inside wall and just driver error.
“I’m gutted … The race was awesome with Ross [Chastain] and Chris and the others at the end. I’m gutted we couldn’t get it. I had a lot of fun, but I’m pretty angry at myself.”
