A 58-year-old man punched in the back of the head by a maniac during a random assault on a Bronx street last month recently died of his injuries, police and sources said Wednesday.
Dequan Jackson, 29, allegedly crept up behind the unsuspecting victim and slugged him, sending him crashing onto the street near Jerome Avenue and West Mosholu Parkway North in Norwood on Aug. 4 at around 5 p.m., according to cops.
EMTs rushed the injured man to Saint Barnabas Hospital where he stayed for more than a month before dying on Sept. 7, police said.
His identity was not released pending family notification.
Jackson was arrested at the scene and slapped with assault charges, but the charges may be upgraded now that his victim is dead, according to sources.
He has 10 prior arrests including for assault, reckless endangerment, grand larceny and criminal possession of a weapon.
Jackson, of the Bronx, was previously arrested in 2021 and charged with assault after whacking his 5-year-old daughter in the arm, sources said.
During his arraignment at Bronx Criminal Court, he pleaded not guilty to the August beatdown and was later released without bail, court records show.
His next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 17.
