Kamala Harris and Donald Trump shook hands and exchanged a few words with each other at the direction of former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg during a ceremony commemorating the anniversary of 9/11.
Bloomberg, himself a former presidential hopeful, initiated the moment just hours after the two rivals stepped off the debate stage in Pennsylvania, which saw the vice president and former president meet in-person for the first time.
At this, their second meeting, the two candidates stood not far from each other, along with President Joe Biden and other major members of both parties.
In the video, Bloomberg can be seen getting Harris’ attention by tapping her on the arm, before directing her toward Trump, who is standing with his running mate, Ohio Sen. JD Vance.
The vice president and former president then shake hands, in an echo of their first in-person meeting on the debate stage last night. The two candidates also exchange a few words to each other, before going back to standing in line.
Newsweek contacted the Trump and Harris campaigns for comment on their meeting and their plans for commemorating 9/11.
Both Harris and Trump have attended the 9/11 anniversary ceremony in past years, as have many politicians running for or holding office. Harris was in New York last year standing in for Biden, who was traveling overseas, as was Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who was running for the Republican nomination at the time.
Earlier today, the Harris campaign informed the 9/11 Day organization that they would be suspending their political ads for the day, in line with the requests made by the non-profit organization for all candidates.
It was not clear if the Trump campaign would be following suit last year, the organization criticized the campaign for deliberately running ads on 9/11.
Wednesday’s 9/11 memorial event could be their last before polling day in November; Trump’s team has yet to agree to a second debate despite challenges from the Harris campaign,
The vice president, alongside Biden, is set to attend memorial ceremonies at all three crash sites: New York City; Shanksville, Pennsylvania, at the site where Flight 93 crashed; and Arlington, Virginia, where another plane was flown into the Pentagon, the headquarters of the Department of Defense.
Trump is set to visit a fire station in New York City.
