Palestinian doctors recently announced that an American woman was fatally shot during a protest in the West Bank amid Israel’s ongoing war with Hamas militants in Gaza.
On Friday, Dr. Ward Basalat told The Associated Press that a 26-year-old woman was fatally shot after arriving to a local hospital.
Witnesses and Palestinian media reported that Israeli troops shot a woman during a pro-Palestinian demonstration against settlement expansion in the northern West Bank.
Dr. Fouad Naffa, the leader of the local hospital, also spoke about the death of the woman to the AP, stating that she was an American citizen.
The Israeli military has yet to make any remarks on the apparent shooting incident in the West Bank.
The woman was reportedly shot while attending a protest against settlement expansion in the Palestinian town of Beita, north of Ramallah in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. These protests, which occur regularly, have previously turned violent. A month ago, American citizen Amado Sison said he was shot in the leg by Israeli forces as he attempted to escape tear gas and live fire.
Basalat, an emergency room doctor at the hospital, said he treated the woman for a gunshot wound to the head. She died shortly after arriving at the facility.
Earlier on Friday, a reporter for The Associated Press said that Israeli forces were seen leaving a refugee camp in Jenin, and by Friday morning no other Israeli troops were inside the refugee camps.
Last month, Israeli military officials announced that they carried out a raid in the West Bank, specifically Jenin, which is widely seen as a militia stronghold during the ongoing war, as well as the city of Tulkarem and the Al-Faraa refugee camp. Israeli military officials stated that the operation targeted militants in Jenin, Tulkarem and the Al-Faraa refugee camps in an effort to curb what they described as increasingly sophisticated and deadly attacks on Israeli civilians.
In August, an American activist said he was shot by Israeli military forces in the West Bank during a protest. Amado Sison, an American pro-Palestinian activist, told the AP that he was shot in his right thigh after he attempted to protect Palestinians during a demonstration at the West Bank. Agence France-Presse reported “Amado Sison” was a pseudonym provided by the activist.
Sison said he was shot by Israeli forces while attending a protest in the West Bank village of Beita. He said he was there to protect Palestinian demonstrators and document any acts of violence.
