One of the best-selling games of all time, Minecraft, is finally getting its inevitable live-action movie adaptation. On Wednesday, Warner Bros. Pictures gave us our first look at A Minecraft Movie, a film that will send four misfits to the cubic, creative world of Minecraft on an adventure to find their way home.
The adventurers trapped in A Minecraft Movie’s blocky Overworld are Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (Jason Momoa), Henry (Eugene Hansen), Natalie (Emma Myers) and Dawn (Danielle Brooks). They’re joined by Jack Black as default Minecraft avatar and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate competitor Steve. Jennifer Coolidge also appears in an undisclosed role.
The lovable losers of A Minecraft Movie “find themselves struggling with ordinary problems” and are pulled into the chunky video game world, according to the film’s synopsis. “To get back home, they’ll have to master this world (and protect it from evil things like Piglins and Zombies, too) while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve,” Warner Bros.’ synopsis explains. “Together, their adventure will challenge all five to be bold and to reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative…the very skills they need to thrive back in the real world.”
Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre) directed A Minecraft Movie. Some version of the Minecraft movie has been in the works for nearly a decade. Director Shawn Levy (Deadpool & Wolverine) was attached to the movie in its earliest stages. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia creator and star Rob McElhenney was next to take a crack at it, attempting to make a Minecraft-flavored adventure in the style of 1985 cult classic The Goonies. Director Peter Sollett (The Path) also tried, with a version about “a teenage girl and her unlikely group of adventurers” who try to save their blocky Overworld from an Ender Dragon. Hess came aboard as director in 2022, alongside Momoa as a producer.
All that work will eventually pay off on April 4, 2025, when A Minecraft Movie premieres in theaters.
