Prime Video is preparing to release a docuseries following the lives of four college athletes at Louisana State University as they navigate through the new reality that is college sports. The series will be called The Money Game and it will debut on September 10.
This series is essentially giving fans an all-access pass into the 2023-24 athletic season for the LSU Tigers. It follows quarterback Jayden Daniels, gymnast Olivia Dunne, and women’s basketball stars Angel Reese and Flau’jae Johnson.
Former LSU star Shaquille O’Neal is one of the executive producers as it takes fans inside the world of the Name, Image, and Likeness deals.
Daniels won the Heisman Trophy this past season, helping him be drafted No. 2 overall in the NFL Draft. He was one of the more dominant players in college football, throwing for 3,812 yards and 40 touchdowns. His dual-threat ability was also special, racking up 1,134 yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground.
Reese and Johnson tried to help LSU go back-to-back but fell short of the quest. Reese ended up being drafted by the Chicago Sky in the first round of the WNBA Draft this year, while Johnson remains at LSU for her junior season.
Dunne is one of the most accomplished gymnasts in college history. She recently helped the Tigers win their first national championship title in program history.
According to On3, Dunne has the second-highest NIL evaluation in college athletics. Johnson comes in at No. 13 on the list.
The world of college sports has changed drastically over the last few years with the addition of the NIL rule. For decades, college athletes were seen as just that, amateurs and they couldn’t profit from their own production on the field.
But in 2021, everything changed in the landscape of collegiate athletics. Players were now able to earn money for their NIL, giving the power back to those who put their bodies on the line each time out.
So far, it has been a mixed bag, with many coaches talking about the challenges of the new age of college sports. Players have more control over everything, including where they can make the most money.
The arrival of the transfer portal has also changed the game, allowing athletes to pivot away from schools at the end of the season. Long-time coaches have argued that the portal has removed some of the culture from college athletics because they do not know who will be on rosters in any given season.
