Camila Mendes (Riverdale) has landed the role of Teela in the forthcoming, live-action Masters of the Universe film from Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel Films, Deadline has learned.
Mendes stars opposite the previously announced Nicholas Galitzine, who plays He-Man. Her character, Teela, is a warrior who as Captain of Eternia’s Royal Guard, is responsible for protecting the royal family, especially Prince Adam aka He-Man.
Based on the iconic Mattel franchise, the film’s plot is being closely guarded. Laika’s Travis Knight is directing the pic from a screenplay by Chris Butler. David Callaham and Aaron and Adam Nee worked on the initial draft. Previously in development at Sony and Netflix, Masters of the Universe is being produced by Escape Artists and Mattel Films for release exclusively in theaters worldwide on June 5, 2026.
Centered on the battle between the heroic He-Man — the universe’s most powerful man — and the evil Skeletor, the Masters of the Universe franchise was introduced by way of a line of popular action figures in 1982. A year later, the animated series He-Man and the Masters of the Universe premiered, becoming one of the first children’s programs to be syndicated on television during its two-season run. Several other film and television adaptations followed, and today the franchise continues to span such consumer touchpoints as toys and video games.
