The vast majority of Americans say they’d never heard of Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz before Vice President Kamala Harris picked him as her 2024 running mate, a new poll shows.
A staggering 71% of those surveyed said they didn’t know enough about Walz to have either a favorable or unfavorable impression of him, according to the NPR/PBS News/Marist National survey published Tuesday.
In comparison, 17% of those polled had a favorable opinion of the Midwestern governor, while 12% viewed him in a negative light, the survey found.
The poll, conducted just last week, was released just hours before Harris, 59, revealed she’d chosen Walz, 60, to complete the Democratic presidential ticket.
Other candidates who were in the running to be selected as Harris’ No. 2 pick — including Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly — were better known among Americans, the same poll found.
Even so, 52% of respondents said they were unaware of Kelly’s name, while 53% didn’t know who Shapiro was, according to the polling.
Walz â a darling of the far left — was thrust into the national spotlight last week when he suddenly became a dark horse candidate as Harris’ running mate.
He reportedly drew Harrisâ eye by leading the charge to defend her against what he branded âweirdâ criticism from ex-President Donald Trump and his running mate, JD Vance.
The governor spent 24 years in the Army National Guard and was a high school teacher before entering politics.
He spent a decade in the US House of Representatives before running for governor in 2018.
The NPR/PBS/Marist survey, which was conducted Aug. 1 to 4 among 1,613 adults, has a margin of error of 3.3 percentage points.
