David Wilson, the longstanding president of Toyota Racing Development (TRD), is set to retire on December 16.
Wilson has been an integral part of TRD’s success, having climbed the ranks from a design engineer to the president of the organization. Since taking over as president in January 2014, he has been pivotal in steering Toyota’s U.S. motorsports operations to new heights. Under his leadership, TRD clinched numerous championships and celebrated victories in racing events including the Daytona 500, the Indianapolis 500, and the 12 Hours of Sebring, among others.
Reflecting on his retirement, Wilson shared, as quoted by Motorsport.com:
“It’s been such an honor to be a member of this Team and work alongside so many dedicated, talented and passionate men and women. I’m humbled and grateful for the trust, support and friendship afforded me throughout my career by my colleagues at TMNA, the Toyota Motor Corporation, our industry and team partners and our athletes.
“But now, I’ve completed my lap and I’m proud to hand the keys over to my friend and ‘brother in arms’, Tyler Gibbs. I have every confidence that Tyler and his team will continue to grow and strengthen TRD’s world-class legacy on and off the track.”
Stepping into Wilson’s position is Tyler Gibbs, the current general manager at TRD, who has been with the organization since 1996. Gibbs, a seasoned veteran in his own right, brings a wealth of experience, having started his career at Cosworth Engineering before joining TRD. He holds an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. As the new president, Gibbs will oversee TRD’s extensive operations across North America, including engine and chassis engineering, manufacturing, and administration.
Gibbs commented on his new appointment:
“I have big shoes to fill. Dave has been the cornerstone of TRD’s growth and culture over the last 35 years. During my 28 years working for Dave, he has given me countless opportunities to learn and grow, and this is another one of those opportunities.
“I’m excited and grateful for the privilege to work with so many incredible people at TRD and TMNA, along with our many partners, and together we’ll seek to continue TRD’s history of success.”
