Way back in yesteryear, a person’s deepest secrets, dreams, and insecurities might be discovered by snooping through their diary. Now, a glance at their search history, as the campaign of Kamala Harris has imagined doing in its latest absolutely scorching social media burn on Republican opponent Donald Trump, does the trick tidily.
In a TikTok posted during the internet’s Golden Hour Monday night (aka way past your bedtime and well before your weekday alarm clock goes off), the @kamalahq account imagined Trump hunt-and-pecking his way through life’s questions with the help of his friendly neighborhood search engine. “What is a prosecutor,” they imagine the candidate asking, and “how to spell democarat.” (Not like that!)
“Do people really not like JD?” he wonders. (No AI needed for that one, his veep pick JD Vance is not crushing it, particularly with women) And the kill shot, beckoning back to when the answers to life were but a GIF-heavy Buzzfeed questionnaire away: “am i weird quiz.”
As the saying goes, if you have to ask…
This particular imagined search query doubles down on a strategy the Democrats have found particularly effective, mocking Republicans by calling them and their ideologies “weird.” Fixating on women’s bodies? Weird. Repeatedly invoking a fictional cannibal complete with his also-fictional honorific? Weird! Diet Mountain Dew? So, so weird. You (in this case, the “you” is the imaginary Trump the Harris campaign has dreamed up, squinting forlornly at a laptop on Trump Force One) hear it enough and you start to wonder, wait, am I weird? Suddenly, it seems to make sense to just go ahead and ask Jeeves.
Well, Donald, let’s see what the algorithm has to say about that.
