You couldn’t write a better “Vote For Kamala” Beyoncé song if you tried. She may not be rocking coconut merch just yet, but Beyoncé gave the Kamala Harris 2024 campaign permission to use “Freedom” on the campaign trail, and it means a lot.
In her first appearance as a candidate—and presumptive nominee—Harris used “Freedom” as her “walk-up” song; it played as she entered the room for her first official campaign headquarters visit. CNN reports that the Harris team got permission from the Beyoncé team “hours” before the event. In a way, this is a stronger show of support than even an outright statement, as Beyoncé, even among her musical peers, is more of a singer than a talker (she doesn’t do interviews), and expresses her point of view through her songs. So by letting Harris play “Freedom,” from the seismic album Lemonade, she’s figuratively and literally lending her voice to the campaign.
Also, “Freedom” is a banger. “I’ma keep running ‘Cause a winner don’t quit on themselves” is such a good motto for a campaign!
And while Grammy winner might not have said “Vote Harris” in so many words, her mom did. On Monday, July 22, Tina Knowles posted a picture of herself and the Vice President (in a very jazzy gold sequin top) and wrote in the caption, “New, Youthful, Sharp , , energy !!!! You asked for it and our President Biden did what was best for the country ! Putting personal Ego , power and fame aside . That is the definition of a great leader, . Thank you, President Biden for your service and your leadership . Go Vice President Kamala Harris for President. Let’s Go #kamala2024.”

Beyoncé and her husband Jay-Z were vocal supporters of the Obama administration, with Bey performing at the 2013 inauguration and the two couples forming a friendship. If Barack and Michelle decide to throw their support behind Harris, either before or after the Democratic National Convention, where the party’s nominee will be officially declared, that may be when the Carters make a statement, too. Or maybe Harris will just keep playing “Freedom” and we’ll all read between the lines. The “Vote for Kamala” Beyoncé song lives on.
