Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton buttressed her previous endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris on Tuesday, describing the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee as “a fresh start for American politics.”
In an op-ed published by The New York Times, Clinton leaned into the message that Harris’ campaign, which started just two days ago, offers a direct contrast to the Republican nominee, former President Donald Trump.
“Elections are about the future,” wrote Clinton, who endorsed Harris on Sunday alongside her husband, former President Bill Clinton. “That’s why I am excited about Vice President Kamala Harris. She represents a fresh start for American politics. She can offer a hopeful, unifying vision. She is talented, experienced and ready to be president. And I know she can defeat Donald Trump.”
Clinton went on to highlight Harris’ background before serving as President Joe Biden‘s running mate. As former attorney general of California, Harris has portrayed herself in her first couple of days running for president as equipped to take on Trump in November—a prosecutor versus a felon.
“I look forward to hearing her prosecute a compelling case against Mr. Trump, who failed as a president the first time and is running on a dangerous agenda,” Clinton said on Tuesday. “A second Trump term would be much worse than the first.”
Newsweek on Tuesday night sent an email to Trump’s campaign asking for comment on Clinton’s op-ed.
Harris told supporters at her first campaign event in Milwaukee earlier Tuesday that during her time as a state prosecutor, she “took on perpetrators of all kinds,” including “fraudsters” and “predators.”
“So hear me when I say, I know Donald Trump’s type,” Harris added.
Trump was convicted of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records by a Manhattan jury in late May over the payment of hush money to adult-film star Stormy Daniels during his 2016 presidential campaign in an attempt to conceal an extramarital affair. Trump denies having relations with Daniels.
The former president has maintained his innocence in the hush money case and all other criminal charges against him, accusing prosecutors at state and local levels of attempting to interfere with his reelection bid. Trump was also found liable of sexually assaulting E. Jean Carroll, a former magazine columnist who accused Trump of raping her in a New York City department store dressing room in the 1990s.
Harris’ bid for the White House, sparked by President Joe Biden’s decision to step down as his party’s nominee on Sunday, has injected a new energy into the Democratic Party. In the roughly 48 hours since she announced her campaign, Harris has brought in a record number of donations and collected enough support from state delegates to be the presumptive nominee ahead of the Democratic National Convention next month.
Trump has wasted no time in focusing his campaign’s attacks on Harris, including writing on his Truth Social account that the vice president is “Dumb as a Rock” and equating her to Biden’s “failed” policies over the past four years, including on the issues surrounding the U.S. southern border. He also created a new nickname for the vice president, “Lyin’ Kamala.”
