Although Sunday presented plenty of political news to dive into, John Oliver is still trying to process the events of last week.
This weekend’s episode of Last Week Tonight was prefaced with a disclaimer that it was filmed on Saturday, July 20, before Joe Biden announced he’s exiting the presidential race and endorsing Kamala Harris in his place.
“The news is moving so fast,” Oliver pointed out in the first few minutes. “We are taping on Saturday, and who knows where things will be by the time you actually watch this?”
He started by recapping his month-long hiatus, during which the debate raised concerns of Biden’s ability to serve, Trump was shot at during an assassination attempt, and Biden tested positive for COVID-19 after saying he would consider dropping out of the race if he had a medical condition.
Oliver then spent the majority of the episode roasting the Republican National Convention, which featured
“There was also Hulk Hogan tearing his shirt off, Kid Rock scream-singing to a crowd that was either not into it or way too into it,” said Oliver, showing a clip of an older man unapologetically dancing in the crowd.
“I know the Republican Party gets a lot of shit for only landing D-list celebrities, but I do have to hand it to them. Booking the actual pair from the American Gothic painting was a pretty good get,” he added with an image of an elderly couple speaking onstage.
The comedian also poked fun at failed presidential candidate Perry Johnson getting “Smash Mouthed” as he was played off stage to the band’s 1999 single ‘All Star’, particularly to the lyric, “I ain’t the sharpest tool in the shed.”
