NASCAR Cup Series Qualifying at the famous Tricky Triangle of Pocono Raceway has just wrapped up an exciting Saturday session. Among the fleet of seasoned drivers, Ty Gibbs triumphantly clinched his second career pole position.
The 21-year-old driver emerged on top during the final round of qualifying, clocking an impressive lap time of 52.929 seconds and reaching a speed of 170.039 mph (273.651 km/h). This outstanding performance secured him a space at the front of the grid for the 2024 Great American Getaway 400. Notably, this follows his first pole victory at the 2024 Coca-Cola 600.
The race for pole position at Pocono was intense, with Gibbs leading a competitive field. The starting grid for the eagerly awaited 2024 Great American Getaway 400 places William Byron in second, followed closely by Martin Truex Jr. and Denny Hamlin, the latter sitting fourth despite a robust track record at this venue. Hamlin, currently fourth in the drivers’ standings and a seven-time victor at Pocono Raceway, had last year clinched a memorable win here involving a dramatic late-race scrape with Kyle Larson, the current championship leader.
Further down the grid, positions were aggressively contested. Notables in the top ten include Josh Berry, Alex Bowman, Tyler Reddick, and Ryan Blaney, with JJ Yeley rounding out the 37th spot.
Whilst speaking with NBC Sports following the Qualifying session, Gibbs commented:
“It was really, really fun and the car is really good. So, we’ll see what we can do and hopefully we can go win (Sunday).”
