KYIV — Drones sent by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) on Sunday blew up an ammunition depot 300 kilometers inside Russia, a Ukrainian official confirmed to POLITICO.
While Russia reported shooting down all the Ukrainian drones in the early hours of Sunday, debris from one of them started a massive detonation at a warehouse housing explosive objects, Voronezh Governor Aleksandr Gusev said in a statement. According to Gusev, no civilians were wounded.
Although Ukraine’s SBU rarely takes official responsibility for attacks in Russia, a Ukrainian law enforcement official told POLITICO that SBU drones struck a large field ammo depot near the Sergeevka village in the Voronezh region, where Russia stores weapons it uses to bomb Ukraine.
“In a 9,000 square-meter warehouse the enemy used to keep different kinds of missiles, shells for tanks and artillery, boxes with cartridges for firearms,” the law enforcement official said. “Locals heard an explosion after which a massive detonation started. They could see the column of smoke tens of kilometers away.”
The official warned that Russia’s military complex should be braced for more attacks.
The Voronezh denotation continued for more than 20 hours, forcing the local government to announce the evacuation of more than 80 locals from the area. As of Sunday evening, Gusev reported that the situation had started to normalize and detonations occurred less often. Only one private house suffered significant damage, but that can be repaired, Gusev said.
