The outcome of the 2024 presidential election is likely to come down to thin margins in a handful of swing states: Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
And there’s one huge bloc with the power to determine the winner: nonvoters.
In 2016, 100 million people who were eligible to vote didn’t do so. In 2020, about 80 million eligible voters didn’t vote.
There are a lot of reasons people might not vote, as varied as apathy and not being able to leave work to go to a polling place. But many potential voters — even those engaged in politics and their communities — intentionally plan to avoid the ballot box this year.
