Former President Donald Trump, in his first rally since the presidential debate on Thursday, continued to go after Joe Biden as a bit of a master political manipulator even as much of the post-event focus has been on the president’s feeble performance.
“Despite the fact that crooked Joe Biden has spent the entire week at Camp David resting, working, studying — he’s studying very hard. He studied so hard that he didn’t know what the hell he was doing. He got the debate rules that he wanted. He got the date that he wanted. He got the network that he wanted with the moderates [sic] that he wanted. No amount of rest or rigging could help him defend his atrocious record. It’s not defensible.”
Trump tried to turn the focus less on Biden’s age than the fact that the president, in his words, was incompetent.
But at his Chesapeake, VA rally, Trump continued to insist that Biden orchestrated his predecessor’s prosecutions at the federal level and in New York, even though there is no evidence that the president had a role. Trump claimed that Biden was using law enforcement to go after him, telling the crowd, “every one of those things last night, you saw that, was all started by this guy, this crooked guy.”
Trump also offered some praise for CNN, saying that he thought that moderators Dana Bash and Jake Tapper “treated me very fairly last night, very professional, both of them.” Trump had bashed the two moderators in the lead up to the debate, to the point where the network issued a statement earlier this week defending them. “I thought they were very fair,” he said.
Earlier today, Biden appeared at a rally in Raleigh, NC, where he told a crowd that “I don’t walk as easily as I used to. I don’t speak as smoothly as I used to. I don’t debate as well as I used to. But I know what I do know. I know how to tell the truth.”
