The View hosts opened Wednesday’s show by debating who they think former President Donald Trump will pick as his running mate.
As the presidential debate between Trump, 78, and President Joe Biden, 81, is set to take place Thursday on CNN, Fox News is airing its vice presidential Apprentice-esque series in which Fox & Friends co-hosts interview potential candidates.
The network aired Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance’s interview on Wednesday. South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott‘s sit-down will air on Thursday and North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum‘s will broadcast on Monday.
Responding to whether the competition-style show will be effective, The View co-host Sara Haines replied, “He’s [Trump] not looking for skill, he’s not looking for even maybe a policy stance. He’s looking for ‘who do people like, where do the largest crowds come?’ because that’s honestly what he needs.”
“But I think it’s nearly a ‘you’re hired,’ not ‘you’re fired,’” Haines referred to Trump’s famous line from The Apprentice, his former longtime reality show where he judged contestants’ business skills.
The conversation quickly shifted away from the Fox & Friends special and more toward the hosts’ thoughts on what qualities Trump is looking for in a VP.
The View host Alyssa Farah Griffin, who worked as press secretary for former Vice President Mike Pence and as an assistant to Trump from October 2017 to September 2019, claimed Trump is seeking someone with ” unabashed loyalty” who “won’t outshine him.”
Therefore, Griffin said she thinks Trump could pick Burgum and not Vance because the latter has aspirations for himself.
“[Burgum] is basically Mike Pence with a higher net worth,” Griffin said.
“I don’t know why anyone would want the job when we know that his last vice president – there was a noose hanging,” co-host Sunny Hostin interjected.
Co-host Joy Behar reminded the panel about Vance calling Trump “America’s Hilter” in 2016 and questioned how he could change his stance so drastically to possibly be Trump’s running mate.
The hosts rebutted by saying all of the potential candidates have spoken out against Trump in some way, recalling when Ben Carson previously appeared on The View and answered their questions “honestly.”
“They [the Republican Party and Trump] don’t want the good guy. They don’t want this good, steady Eddy guy,” Hostin said.
“They want somebody crazy?” Behar shot back, to which Hostin claimed she thinks Trump wants a “loyalist” who “will never oppose him.”
Behar also joked that Rubio would “be just the right height to kiss Trump’s behind,” which got a laugh from the studio audience.
CNN’s Jake Tapper will host the 90-minute presidential debate between Trump and Biden on Thursday at 9 p.m. It will be broadcast on CNN at 9 p.m. and can also be streamed on Max.
