Dandadan is one of the most highly anticipated anime coming out in 2024. Fans of sci-fi horror manga about a pair of hapless teenagers thrown into a bunch of supernatural nonsense won’t have to wait until October to see the anime however, as film distributor GKIDS announced on Monday that the beginning of Dandadan will premiere in theaters this September.
GKIDS, which acquired the theatrical and home entertainment rights for the anime back in June, announced that the first three episodes of Dandadan will screen in theaters nationwide on Sept. 13. The screenings, dubbed the “Dan Da Dan: First Encounter” event, will include bonus special content, including a video interview with series creator Yukinobu Tatsu and editor Shihei Lin, the anime’s director Fūga Yamashiro, and more. Listings for which theaters will be participating have not yet been announced, but are expected to be revealed on the event’s website in the coming weeks.

Debuting in April 2021, Dandadan (alternatively spelled “Dan Da Dan”) follows the story of Momo Ayase and Ken “Okarun” Takakura, two high school classmates who are obsessed with ghosts and aliens, respectively. After daring one another to visit places associated with the occult and the supernatural, the pair discover that both aliens and ghosts exist — putting their own lives in mortal danger.
Dandadan is being produced by Science Saru, the Japanese anime studio behind 2020’s Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! and 2023’s Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. The series marks Yamashiro’s first time as a series director, having previously worked as an episode director on 2021’s Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! and an assistant director on 2021’s Inu-Oh. Dandadan will also feature music composed by Kensuke Ushio, who previously worked as a composer on Chainsaw Man and Devilman Crybaby.
Dan Da Dan is scheduled to stream on Crunchyroll this October, following the theatrical event.
