Bridgerton actress Simone Ashley has come to the defense of her co-star Nicola Coughlan, who has received body-shaming comments from some viewers of the Netflix show.
Speaking at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival in Monaco on June 15, Ashley had some positive things to say about Coughlan’s career and outlook.
âYeah, the haters are going to hate, and I think we can all relate to that, but I really donât think that sheâs allowing that to bother her,â she said during a press conference. âShe has a strong and fruitful career and entire life ahead of her. And I really believe in her, as the world does as well.â
Ashley plays the part of Kate Bridgerton in the Netflix series, while Coughlan plays Penelope Featherington.
Coughlanâs character becomes a central focus in Season 3 as her love story with Luke Newtonâs Colin Bridgerton evolves into a main plot point.
âI think Nicola is just absolutely flying,â Ashley said. âShe is a gorgeous, strong, confident, intelligent woman, seeing her do this press tour and spread so much joy and inspiration to everyone â especially women â all over the world.â
Ashley said she was âinspiredâ by Coughlan, adding, âSheâs also a really kind human being, and I think thatâs such a universal language that people can relate to.â
In the most recent season of Bridgerton, Coughlan is involved in several intimate scenes with her co-star Newton. At a recent fan event, a viewer called her âbraveâ for shooting the scenes and Coughlin responded.
âYou know, I think it is hard, because I think women with my body type, women with perfect breasts, we donât get to see ourselves on screen enough,â she said. âI am a very proud member of the perfect breasts community, and I hope you enjoy seeing them.â
