Supermarket chain Wegmans has announced a recall of four flavors of Abilyn’s Frozen Bakery Ice Cream Cakes over risks that the desserts could be contaminated with listeria.
According to the announcement, the ice cream cakes were sold at Wegmans locations and marked with a Best By date from April 20, 2024, to April 20, 2025. The company has over 110 grocery stores across eight states—Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Virginia. There is also one in the District of Columbia.
Abilyn’s Frozen Bakery said in its own statement that the company was informed by its production partner on Friday that testing by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration found the “presence of possible contamination on the production line” that was used to produce the desserts.
The bakery, which is dedicated to creating gluten-free desserts, said that there was “no indication that our ice cream cakes have been contaminated” but that it issued the recall “out of an abundance of caution.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), listeria bacteria, or Listeria monocytogenes, causes roughly 1,600 illnesses a year. Approximately 260 people die from listeria infections in the U.S. annually.
Pregnant women and newborn children are at a higher risk to contract a listeria infection, as well as adults ages 65 and older or those with a weakened immune system, read the CDC website. Symptoms can include fever, headache, confusion, stiff neck, loss of balance, seizures, or flu-like symptoms, such as muscle aches.
