Less than a year after Bryan Freedman’s law firm added Jay-Z lawyer Miles Cooley to the masthead, Freedman Taitelman + Cooley LLP is rebranding again.
Real estate and business attorney Stuart Liner is coming out of retirement to be the firm’s managing partner and new named partner, I’ve learned. There’s no new logo yet, but the new banner will be Liner Freedman Taitelman + Cooley LLP as of July 1.
Already a heavyweight in the Hollywood legal arena, Freedman sees the addition of the Liner LLP founder to the firm he co-founded 27 years ago as a making a local commercial and cultural statement and establishing new revenue streams in the evolving media market.
“When Stuart told us that he would be open to leading our firm into the future, Michael, Miles and I were ecstatic and honored,” said Freedman of the San Diego State University and Loyola Law School graduate. “The firm has had tremendous revenue growth in the past several years, which has now created for us the ability to strategically invest in expanding the firm’s capabilities and services, while also creating non-legal revenue stream opportunities with top-tier clients and industry entrepreneurs.”
Liner left the law in 2022 after selling the1996-founded and 75-attorney strong Liner LLP to DLA Piper in 2017.
“It wasn’t my original plan to return to law,” Liner told Deadline today. “But when Bryan, Mike and Miles came to me with this unique opportunity to add firepower to the successful platform they had built in the areas of entertainment, technology and real estate—the three main drivers of our local economy—all I could see were endless opportunities and upside.”
Liner added: “Their market position, willingness to take risk by investing with and for clients, and their leadership in brand and reputation promotion and protection creates value levers that I am really excited to help maximize.”
“Stuart is a master at building law firms, recruiting and honing talent, and promoting a high-performance culture, while navigating complexity and mitigating risk,” said firm co-founder Taitelman. “We look forward to collaborating with him to create the firm of the future.”
“Stuart recruited me to DLA back in the day and became a mentor to me,” said the now second to most recent named partner Cooley on Wednesday. “Being able to now work alongside him on all aspects of our firm—especially to more deeply grow our contingency practice—will not only be gratifying, it will be fun.”
Increasingly high profile in the competitive and image conscious LA legal world, Freedman has been engaged of late in a multi-prong effort to shine a light on the allegedly toxic underbelly of Reality TV, among other cases. Additionally, as Deadline exclusively reported earlier this week, the Liner Freedman Taitelman + Cooley LLP co-founder saw his client La La Land composer Justin Hurwitz reached an apparently healthy settlement with his ex-agency WME over a lingering legal war spawned by the live concert version of the Oscar winning flick.
