Cartoon Network is in production on an Adventure Time movie, featuring the talents of Adventure Time veterans Rebecca Sugar, Patrick McHale, and Adam Muto, reports Variety.
There’s scant more news about the project, like whether it’ll be released theatrically or on the Max streaming service, or which of Adventure Time’s sprawling cast it’ll focus on, but that lineup of creators should catch the interest of any fan of the venerable animation series.
The movie appears to be the first new major work from Sugar since the close of Steven Universe and Steven Universe Future. McHale made his post-AT name as the creator of the beloved Over the Garden Wall miniseries, while Muto has continued to shepherd Adventure Time through a series of spinoff specials and Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake, already renewed for a second season.
Warner Bros. Animation and Cartoon Network have also greenlit two spinoff series specifically aimed at a child audience — an interesting distinction to make from the movie. Adventure Time: Side Quests will take child audiences back to Finn and Jake’s pre-hero childhood days for lore-light standalone episodes, while Adventure Time: Heyo BMO will aim at the preschool audience, in what appears to be a claymation series starring the lovable robot BMO and maybe Shelby the worm?
“After settling into a new neighborhood,” Variety writes, “BMO and a group of new friends will face challenges that are more appropriate for younger viewers.” Muto is attached to this series as well.
