It’s hard to remain mysterious when your mom is a popular talk show host, as The 1975 frontman Matty Healy has surely learned now that his mom, Denise Welch, confirmed Wednesday on-air that he is engaged to Gabbriette (birth name Gabriella Bechtel). Gabbriette implied as much via her Instagram Stories Tuesday night, posting a photo of her own left hand resting on someone’s backside, bearing a ring set with a large, rectangular black jewel and diamond halo on her fourth finger, captioning it, “MARRYING THE 1975 IS VERY BRAT” and tagging Healy’s account. She’s not saying brat in the pigtail-pulling sense—she was at friend Charli XCX’s concert and referencing both the musician’s most recent album, titled Brat, and that Charli XCX, too, is engaged to another The 1975 band member. She and drummer George Daniel got engaged in October 2023.
On the next slide, she shared a mirror selfie, again displaying the ring. Healy reshared her post on his own Instagram Stories along with a barrage of unrelated memes, but neither has publicly commented on the engagement.
You know who loves to comment? Moms! Including Healy’s. On her show Loose Women, Welch said she has “known for a few weeks that Matty got engaged.”
“They went over to see their friends Charli and George in New York and I woke up this morning to the fact they’ve put it on Instagram. Instagram official!” she continued.
She went on to share a few more key details about the ring (“black diamond, he had it made for her”), her feelings about the union (“I couldn’t be more thrilled. We couldn’t be happier—she is everything I would want in a daughter-in-law. I’m thrilled.”), and even a fun fact, a little conversation starter for parties (“She has a rat.”).
Healy and Gabbriette were first publicly linked in September 2023. Healy was previously connected to Taylor Swift in the aftermath of her split from actor Joe Alwyn, whom she dated for six years, not to mention decade-old gossip about the two. The controversial relationship is speculated to be the inspiration for several of the songs on Swift’s latest album, The Tortured Poets Department, including the title track.
Asked shortly after the album’s release what he thought of his “diss track”, Healy first appeared befuddled, then said, “I’m sure it’s good” before sauntering away.
Around the same time, Welch took the opportunity to cheekily comment on the album on Loose Women as well.
“I wasn’t aware she had an album out at all,” Welch said, smiling. “I haven’t heard anything about it. Anyway, I wish her all the best.”
