Peaky Blinders fans just got a peak at some exciting news.
Netflix announced a Peaky Blinders film on Tuesday, and revealed that series star Cillian Murphy will be returning to reprise his role as Tommy Shelby.
The streaming giant’s announcement featured a picture of the script, which also lists Tom Harper as the director and cites series creator Steven Knight as the film’s writer.
Murphy shared the following statement in Tuesday’s announcement:
“It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me… It is very gratifying to be recollaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders. This is one for the fans.”
Knight, the series creator, had confirmed in March that Murphy was “definitely returning” to the new film, telling Birmingham World, “We’re shooting it in September just down the road in Digbeth,” per Variety.
In light of Tuesday’s announcement, Knight said he’s “genuinely thrilledthat this movie is about to happen,” per Deadline.
“It will be an explosive chapter in the Peaky Blinders story,” he continued. “No holds barred. Full-on Peaky Blinders at war.”

“When I first directed Peaky Blinders over 10 years ago, we didn’t know what the series would become, but we did know that there was something in the alchemy of the cast and the writing that felt explosive,” Harper said, per Deadline. “Peaky has always been a story about family — and so it’s incredibly exciting to be reuniting with Steve and Cillian to bring the movie to audiences across the world on Netflix.”
No further intel on the film was disclosed in the streamer’s reveal.
The British crime drama series aired for six seasons, with its final season first airing in the UK in February 2022 before landing on Netflix in June 2022. The show’s title is derived from a real-life gang called Peaky Blinders in Birmingham, England that existed in the late 1800s, per Netflix’s Tudum.
This news arrives on the heels of Murphy’s stellar awards season. His performance as J. Robert Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan‘s Oppenheimer won him Best Actor at the Oscars, BAFTA Awards, and the Golden Globes.
He was even endorsed to be the next James Bond by Pierce Brosnan.
“Cillian would do a magnificent job as James Bond on His Majesty’s Secret Service,” he told the BBC in March.
Seasons 1-6 of Peaky Blinders are streaming on Netflix.
