Sony has officially fired the starting pistol on the summer games multitude event, as it announced its May State of Play on May 29 and aired it on May 30. The State of Play was a fairly understated event — it wasn’t a full-blown dog-and-pony show — but it also gave us the first major games reveals of the summer. This means that the summer gaming show has begun, and we’re hardly going to be stopping to breathe until roughly June 10.
Most of the event was fairly pedestrian (though I did note that, despite their announcement that this was about late 2024 games, there were a lot of 2025 titles in the mix), with the biggest reveals being Firewalk’s Concord, a gameplay trailer for Monster Hunter Wilds and a new Astro Bot. Right after that event, we got the Silent Hill Transmission where we saw about 15 minutes of fresh Silent Hill 2 Remake footage. The new version of the game has more of a “modern” look (by which I mean it looks like Resident Evil 4), but I’m not mad about it — the art design still looks very Silent Hill.
As for what we can look forward to later next week, when the … let’s be nice and call it “fun” continues: We’re getting a new Black Ops for sure, not to mention more info on a new Assassin’s Creed games. I can think of any number of E3’s for which this makes me nostalgic. I’m also putting down Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and maybe the new Bioshock game as likely candidates, as well as some of those Xbox games we haven’t heard about for a while (looking at you, Perfect Dark and Fable titles). As for what I’m personally hoping to see, put Dragon Age: Dreadwolf on the list — which may actually not be that vain of a hope this year.
In personal news, I’m at DreamHack Dallas this weekend, where I’ll hopefully be watching some pros play games better than I ever could. I’ll also likely try out Senua’s Saga and XDefiant if I have the time, and part of me desperately wants to make space for The Rogue Prince of Persia (though admittedly if I’m really in need of a Prince fix, The Lost Crown is still right there).
