The voice of a generation is speaking up about her recent bout with illness. The first trailer for Prime Video’s documentary I Am: Celine Dion, documenting Canadian icon Celine Dion‘s historic career and struggle with stiff person’s syndrome, has dropped, and the “My Heart Will Go On” singer is not holding back.
The trailer opens with Dion in a recording booth, unleashing her classic belt. “Is the sound man okay?” she asks. We then see clips of the star performing for crowds of thousands, interspersed with footage of her playing on a VR headset with her twin sons Nelson and Eddy Angélil. “When your voice brings you joy… you’re the best of yourself,” she says. “I need my instrument.”
And then tragedy strikes. In December 2022, Dion was diagnosed with stiff person’s syndrome, a rare neurological disorder that can lead to progressive muscular rigidity and stiffness. The trailer shows behind-the-scenes footage of the video where Dion announced her diagnosis to the world, revealing that she would have to take a step back from her beloved Vegas residency to recover. “I wasn’t ready to say anything before, but I’m ready now,” Dion says.
I Am: Celine Dion proceeds to capture Dion managing her illness while also highlighting her immense talent via shots from her many iconic live performances. “”It’s not hard to do a show, you know. It’s hard to cancel a show,” Dion says, while doing physical therapy. “I’m working hard every day, but I have to admit it’s been a struggle.”
But ever the fighter, Dion is determined to make it back where she belongs. “I miss it so much. The people, I miss them,” a tearful Dion says. “If I can’t run, I’ll walk. If I can’t walk, I’ll crawl.”
I Am: Celine Dion hits theaters on June 25th.
