Prison Break star Sarah Wayne Callies is opening up about a harrowing experience that happened to her on the set of the hit FOX drama. The actress — who starred as Sara Tancredi in 76 episodes across the series, including its fifth revival season —revealed on Monday’s (May 20) installment of Rachel Bilson and Olivia Allen’s Broad Ideas podcast that a male co-star of her’s once spat in her face, per Page Six.
The disclosure came up as Callies shared what it’s been like launching the Prison Breaking rewatch podcast alongside fellow Prison Break alum, Paul Adelstein. She told Bilson and Allen that she “could not have done this until this year,” for she “couldn’t get beyond the parts that were toxic and painful.”
Although she said she now looks back on Prison Break with “so much gratitude,” she highlighted the “rampant misogyny” and “all of the challenges” she dealt with on the set, as well as being “the only woman around.”
“There were definitely two edges to that sword,” she shared. “I mean, like, I’ve had an actor on that show spit in my face. And I was like, ‘Holy shit.’”
While she didn’t elaborate on who the culprit was, she said that she and Adelstein “will get there on [their] podcast” and “will talk about it someday.”
“There were things, like I would go home some nights and have to spend an hour talking my husband out of going to hospitalize somebody,” she shared.
She noted that “some of the guys were great, and some of them were totally gentlemen,” as well as that “so much of it was also great” and that she “made lifelong friends.” However, the negative memories originally prevented her from rewatching the series.
“But I wasn’t ready, Rachel, for exactly that reason, because I didn’t want it to send me into a spiral of like, what did I let them do to me?” she elaborated. “What did I let them say to me? What did I put up with? What did I not report? All of that.”
In other Prison Break news, Deadline reported in November 2023 that a revival set in the world of the original series is in the works from Mayans M.C. showrunner Elgin James, and will head to Hulu, which is the current streaming home for the series.
