Amazon has scrapped its planned Marvel drama series Silk: Spider Society.
The Sony Pictures Television project, which hails from former Walking Dead showrunner Angela Kang, will reportedly shop to other streamers.
Kang is under an eight-figure deal with Amazon after ending her contract with AMC. She will continue to develop projects for the Amazon, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The brand new show’s cancelation comes just two days after Amazon announced a Sony-produced Marvel series titled Noir, starring Nicolas Cage.
Noir will debut on Amazon’s linear network, MGM+, before premiering on the streamer. This was the same plan that Amazon had for Silk, which could mean that Noir snagged its spot.
Both shows are executive produced by Phil Lord, Chris Miller and Amy Pascal (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse). Disney, which owns most of the MCU, could likely be a buyer for Silk (although this is just speculation).
Silk was formally announced in November 2022 but had been delayed due to the writers’ strike. Amazon and Sony TV had delayed reopening its writers’ room earlier this year, resulting in a warning issued by the WGA.
The characters at the center of Silk, which was inspired by the Marvel comics, were created by Dan Slott and Humberto Ramos. The series follows Cindy Moon, a Korean-American woman bitten by the same spider that bit Peter Parker, while escaping imprisonment. As she searches for her missing family, she becomes the superhero known as Silk.
It was to be one of the first to feature a Korean-American superhero at its center.
