Sony has dated a new film in its Insidious horror franchise from Blumhouse Productions for release on August 29, 2025, the studio revealed Thursday evening.
No further details about the project were disclosed, but this is not the Jeremy Slater-helmed Thread: An Insidious Tale, a spin-off starring Mandy Moore and Kumail Nanjiani, on which we were first to report.
Marking the sixth entry in the franchise, this new Insidious film comes on the heels of Insidious: The Red Door, an entry marking franchise star Patrick Wilson’s feature directorial debut, which grossed over $189 million at the worldwide box office.
Launching in 2010, the Insidious franchise from James Wan and Leigh Whannell delves into the theme of hauntings, primarily focusing on the existence of a malevolent realm known as “The Further.” This otherworldly dimension is inhabited by vengeful spirits and demons that seek to infiltrate the world of the living, often resulting in terrifying consequences for those who come across it. In total, the Insidious films have grossed over $730M globally.
This week has brought plenty of release date news, with Sony announced earlier today that its new I Know What You Did Last Summer film from director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge) will be released via Columbia Pictures on July 18, 2025.
Prior to that, Universal shared that Blumhouse’s thriller The Woman in the Yard will open on Friday, March 28, 2025, with Platinum Dunes and Blumhouse’s Drop debuting on Friday, April 11, 2025 and Blumhouse’s Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 to scare up box office on Friday, December 5, 2025. Also revealed as part of that announcement was the fact that Blumhouse’s The Black Phone 2 will shift from June 27, 2025 to Friday, October 17, 2025, with Blumhouse’s M3GAN 2.0 shifting from from May 16, 2025 into the June slot. All of the Uni films will open wide.
Less than a week ago, Sony disclosed that Danny Boyle’s anticipated zombie flick 28 Years Later will also debut next summer, hitting theaters June 20, 2025.
