X-Men ’97 is like a dream come true for fans of the superhero franchise. The iconic animated series X-Men: The Animated Series was rebooted on Disney+ this year with most of the original cast members returning to reprise their roles. Can it get any better than this?
The Disney+ series is a continuation of the 1992 animated show that aired on Fox, with the reboot picking up right where the show left off in 1997.
After the shocking events of the X-Men: The Animated Series finale, Cyclops (voiced by Ray Chase) has stepped up to lead the X-Men in a world that has turned its back on them. The show features the return of some of our favorite superheroes – and their messy love lives – along with some new ones. As Decider’s Brett White put it, Season 1 has been giving “mile-a-minute, pulse-pounding, in-your-face action ever since the premiere.”
With the final part of the X-Men ’97 Season 1 finale, titled “Tolerance is Extinction,” premiering today on Disney+, many fans are wondering whether they should expect more from the series. Here’s what we know so far.
Will there be a X-Men ’97 Season 2?
There’s good news: Not only will there be an X-Men ’97 Season 2, but Season 3 is reportedly already in development, according to series executive producer and Marvel Studios’ Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation Brad Winderbaum.
Ahead of the show’s premiere in March, Winderbaum said they’re “through the animatic phase of Season 2” and are in the process of “developing Season 3.”
While announcing writer-producer Beau DeMayo’s exit from the show just weeks before its premiere, The Hollywood Reporter also noted that he had already “completed writing duties on season two” and was “discussing loose ideas for a third season” before his departure.
When will X-Men ’97 Season 2 premiere?
With Season 2 already in development, there is a chance that X-Men ’97 could return in early 2025.
Winderbaum told Entertainment Weekly in March, “I’ve now seen versions of animatics for the entire second season. Obviously, when you’re in that stage, there’s a lot of work to do. It’s editorial, but it’s also still iterative because there’s still story to be worked out when you put it on its feet in that way.”
But it also appears they are searching for writers for Season 3 with DeMayo’s exit, as he said they are “trying to figure out who is going to be that voice on the page.”
X-Men ’97 and X-Men: The Animated Series are both streaming on Disney+.
