Hihi, Mr. & Mrs. Smith have officially received another mission. After debuting its first installment on February 2, the Prime Video series is getting a second season, Amazon announced at Tuesday’s upfront presentation in New York. A reimagining of the 2005 film starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, the TV version paired Donald Glover, who cocreated and executive-produced the series alongside Francesca Sloane, with Maya Erskine of PEN15 fame.
“We are excited to announce that a second season of our groundbreaking spy series, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, is in the works for our global Prime Video customers,” Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios, said in a statement to Variety. “The success of the first season, with its incredibly modern, sexy reinvention of the original film, is a testament to the brilliant creators Donald Glover and Francesa Sloane. We are proud to bring you another season filled with unforgettable journeys and new adventures.”
Glover and Erskine “are not expected to return to star” in the second season, according to Variety’s sources. He recently unveiled plans for a world tour as Childish Gambino beginning in August through February 2025; she is penning the HBO limited series The Perfect Nanny, in which Erskine will star opposite Nicole Kidman. Sloane is believed to be returning as the series’ showrunner. Vanity Fair has reached out to reps for the series, as well as Glover and Erskine, regarding the casting report.
The first season ends with a finale in which it’s unclear whether Glover’s John and Erskine’s Jane are alive after a bloody showdown with another pair of spies. That leaves room for a new couple to take over the Smith mantle, just as Erskine and Glover did at the show’s beginning. If Mr. & Mrs. Smith goes the anthology route, it would follow the trajectory of recent limited series including Netflix’s Beef and HBO’s The White Lotus.
“I can’t say anything,” Erskine previously told VF of what the show tackles next. “I know where it goes, but it would be such a disservice. Oh, God, I hate holding things, and I want to tell you everything that I can. I really want to, but just know, I think it’s very exciting where it will lead.”
