Over the weekend, it was reported that Steve Buscemi, Emmy-winning character actor of Fargo and Reservoir Dogs fame, had been randomly attacked while walking in New York City last week. Buscemi is now the second actor from the hit HBO drama Boardwalk Empire to be assaulted while in the city this year.
According to The New York Times, the 66-year-old was punched in the face while strolling near the corner of Third Avenue and East 27th Street in the Kips Bay neighborhood of Manhattan on Wednesday. The attacker approached and punched Buscemi in the face around 11:48 a.m., according to information released by the NYPD last week. Police did not reveal Buscemi’s identity, but it was confirmed by his publicist to the Times. After the assault, he was treated at Bellevue Hospital for bruising, swelling and bleeding in his left eye, the police said.
“Steve Buscemi was assaulted in Midtown Manhattan, another victim of a random act of violence in the city,” his publicist said in the statement to the publication. “He is OK and appreciates everyone’s well wishes, though incredibly sad for everyone that this has happened to while also walking the streets of New York.”
The attack on Buscemi, a Brooklyn native and former firefighter whose role on 30 Rock inspired the popular “How do you do, fellow kids?” meme, follows an assault on his fellow Boardwalk Empire castmate Michael Stuhlbarg. In April, Stuhlbarg was struck while walking in Central Park by a rock-wielding stranger. Stuhlbarg chased the man, 27-year-old Xavier Israel, out of the park, where he was charged with assault. The following day, Stuhlbarg made his debut in the Broadway play Patriots, a performance that later earned him a Tony Award nomination.
No arrests have been made in relation to Buscemi’s attack, and as of Sunday, the investigation was ongoing, police told the Times. The NYPD has also released surveillance photos of the alleged assailant, as reported by CNN, and asked for help in identifying the suspect. According to police, “The individual is described as a male with dark complexion, wearing a dark colored baseball style cap, blue t shirt, black pants, white sneakers, and carrying a bookbag.”
