Nava Mau is revealing that she shot a scene for Baby Reindeer that was deleted from the Netflix series, which gave her closure alongside her character.
Mau portrayed Teri, a trans woman Richard Gadd’s Donny gets romantically involved with. The relationship eventually sours, and they both end up going their separate ways.
Viewers sympathized with Teri throughout the series and some were disappointed she didn’t get her happy ending with Donny. However, Mau says there was a scene that was cut from the show but gave her the closure she needed.
“There actually was one more piece of Teri and Donny’s relationship in the script, and I performed it,” Mau told GQ in an interview. “Teri leaves Donny a voicemail five months later. So I think, for me, I got closure because Teri did too. That’s what gave me so much comfort, knowing that they found peace with regards to their relationship.”
She continued, “Teri got her happy ending, you know? Teri found a new man, she didn’t lose her friends, she didn’t lose her job, she didn’t lose her smile. She’s good. And I think that is remarkable, because so often we’ve seen stories of trans people that end with them broken.”
In the Netflix series, Mau moves on to find a new relationship after things don’t work out with Donny. Viewers witness Mau and her new boyfriend after Donny spots them from afar walking on the street.
Mau also said that playing Teri “1000%” changed her, adding, “I really had to figure out what it is that keeps me from being so self-assured, and why do swallow my anger? And where does it go? She inspired me.”
