Gypsy Rose Blanchard has been getting the full celebrity treatment ever since her release from prison, right down to the intense scrutiny of her dating life. The convicted murderer turned pop culture sensation even earned her own Hot Topic on The View this morning as the co-hosts discussed her divorce and new boyfriend.
After recapping Blanchard’s romantic life â including her marriage to Ryan Scott Anderson, subsequent separation from Anderson and reunion with ex-fiancé Ken Urker, another man she connected with while imprisoned â Joy Behar quipped, “Who needs Tinder, ladies? Just get arrested.”
Meanwhile, Sunny Hostin was baffled by Blanchard’s relationships.
“I just don’t understand prison love,” she began, as Behar joked, “You know where they are all the time. There’s a lot of positives.”
Still, Hostin argued, “I have successful, beautiful girlfriends that can’t get a date, and here she is, having been convicted â pled guilty â to murdering her mother … pled guilty to second-degree murder.”
As Sara Haines reminded Hostin that Blanchard had been “severely abused” by her mother before Blanchard planned her death, Hostin replied, “Well, she killed her mom. I don’t know how you then start writing letters to her and then sleep next to her as a husband without one eye open, because she killed a loved one.”
Haines continued to defend Blanchard, reminding the panel that she endured “severe abuse” ever since she was an infant and mentioning the “trauma she will carry every single day of her life.” When Haines began to say, “I give her so many passesâ” Hostin interrupted to deadpan, “She murdered her mom.”
Alyssa Farah Griffin then jumped in to add, “She did do the time, but murder is wrong,” and Hostin echoed, “Murder is bad.”
Behar also weighed in, noting, “Many people are abused and they don’t kill their parents,” while Ana Navarro, who had been silent for much of the chat, said she was “scarred” by speculating on Kate Middleton’s whereabouts before it was revealed the royal had cancer.
“I said I would [zip it] about other people’s lives,” she said, miming pulling a zipper to close her lips. But she did add, “I hope she thrives, I hope she’s happy,” as Hostin reminded the panel yet again, “She murdered her mother.”
Behar, possibly mishearing what Hostin said, interjected, “Everyone marries their mother,” which prompted Navarro to quip, “Marries? If she’s gonna marry her mother, she’s gonna need a shovel.”
The line made Behar burst out laughing, before she said in shock, “This show is very dark.” Can’t argue with that!
The View airs weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
