Brian McCardie, the Scottish actor best known as Line of Duty crime boss Tommy Hunter, has died aged 59.
The actor’s family confirmed his death through his sister Sarah’s X account.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Brian James McCardie (59), beloved son, brother, uncle and dear friend to so many,” the statement read. “Brian passed away suddenly at home on Sunday 28th April.
“A wonderful and passionate actor on stage and screen, Brian loved his work and touched many lives, and is gone much too soon. We love him and will miss him greatly; please remember Brian in your thoughts. Funeral arrangements will be announced in the days ahead. As a family, we would ask for privacy at this time.”
McCardie only appeared in hit BBC cop drama Line of Duty three times, but his important role is well remembered, and he acted in season one of another influential drama from the UK public broadcaster, Time. He has also appeared in Outlander, Rebellion, M.I. High, Fortitude, the Snatch TV series, The Last Czars, Crime and, most recently, in Agatha Christie drama Murder is Easy. On the film front, he had roles in Mia and the Dragon Princess and reset short The Rising of the Sap. He was currently filming Starz drama Outlander: Blood of My Blood.
His agents, United Agents, issued a statement, saying: “We are shocked and so deeply saddened by the tragic news of Brian’s sudden death. He was an actor of such great talent who we were lucky to represent, and our thoughts are very much with his family and friends at this difficult time.”
BAFTA Scotland added: “We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of actor Brian McCardie. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and peers at this difficult time.”
