The situation surrounding the top quarterbacks in the 2024 NFL Draft is getting wild. Everyone assumes that the Chicago Bears are taking USC’s Caleb Williams No. 1 overall and the Washington Commanders are taking LSU’s Jayden Daniels No. 2 overall. However, after that becomes anyone’s guess.
The New England Patriots currently own the No. 3 overall pick in the draft, and a week ago everyone would have assumed they would be taking UNC’s Drake Maye. Despite most analysts being on board with this, the front office for the team stated they were having “ongoing” talks about potentially trading out of the No. 3 overall pick.
While this could have been a smokescreen to throw other teams off, it also has led to many reports about teams calling the Patriots. One of the teams that has been aggressive in its bid to leap up to the No. 3 overall pick is the New York Giants.

According to longtime NFL insider Jordan Schultz, “The #Giants have been trying to trade up to No. 3 with the #Patriots, with the belief being they want UNC QB Drake Maye, according to multiple league sources. The prevailing belief is it’s a long shot to happen — but New England is listening to all calls.”
The Giants currently own the No. 6 overall pick but are likely not banking on Maye or even Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy being available then. New York only has six picks in this year’s draft, but they do have two high enough picks that could allow them to leap up a few spots.
They are picking No. 6 overall, as previously stated, and have a high second round pick with the No. 47 overall. The Giants would likely have to send both those over and potentially an additional first-round pick in 2025 to entice the Patriots to accept this deal.
Maye is one of the hottest quarterback prospects in the NFL Draft, and some believe that he might be on the same level as Daniels and Williams. There is a big reason why teams have been calling about Maye — and it has everything to do with him having the right kind of skillset to be a day-one starter.
Maye finished his 2023 campaign with 3,608 yards, 24 TDs, 9 INTs, and a completion percentage of 63.3. He would immediately elevate any quarterback room, and the Giants are looking to move on from Jones.
They have paid Jones a lot of money, and he has not produced the right kind of stats or wins that justify his contract. It makes sense the Giants are attempting an aggressive move, as they need a proven franchise quarterback, which could certainly be Maye.
