Drew Barrymore, she’s just like us. On this morning’s episode of the star’s eponymous daytime talk show, she revealed that she would rather “eat glass” than pay a visit to the dentist.
During a Drew’s News segment on The Drew Barrymore Show, Barrymore and co-host Ross Mathews chatted about one Minneapolis dentist’s secret weapon when it comes to calming his anxious patients: his goldendoodle named Ollie, who sits on their laps during appointments.
“Douglas, we have a dentist appointment next week,” Barrymore suggested to her own pooch, who was chilling in the studio.
She continued, “All I know is that every time I go to the dentist, I’m like, ‘Break out the gas, the needle. Like, can you put me in twilight?’”
Barrymore described her experiences at the dentist as “so miserable and painful,” explaining, “I have really sensitive teeth. I have, like, crooked, yellow, nasty, old teeth. I don’t have those gorgeous, chomper, pearly whites.”
She added, “I hate it. I hate it so much but I go.”
Mathews, on the other hand, revealed how he tricked himself into enjoying dentist appointments. “I was so scared of the dentist for a while and then I just decided — I made the change in my head. I said, ‘No, you like it now.’ And I believe myself,” he told Barrymore.
The actress then turned to the audience and asked if anyone else would rather “eat glass” than go to the dentist, prompting many hands to shoot up in the air, including one that belonged to a woman named Michelle.
“I basically ask my dentist every time I go if she can just knock me out. She doesn’t, sadly,” the audience member said, to which Barrymore jokingly replied, “Michelle, I wish that you and I could open an oral facility where you come in and you don’t know what happens and then you just get sent out.”
